One Nation One Ration Card – What is it and How Will it Work?

The PM Narendra Modi led central govt. is going to start One Nation One Ration Card Scheme very soon. In this scheme, govt. will focus on digitization of ration cards of citizens and start linking of ration cards with Aadhar card number. All the ration cardholders would be able to avail ration from public distribution system (PDS) / fair price shops located nearby them.

The main objective to start 1 Nation 1 Ration Card Yojana is to ensure that no beneficiary is left out of getting subsidized food grains under the Food Security Scheme. Moreover, this scheme will ensure ration card portability as people would be able to avail food grains on subsidy from any shop across the country.

The central govt. also plans to create a real time database of ration card similar to that of GSTIN.

One Nation One Ration Card Scheme

This new move of starting of One Nation One Ration Scheme of the Modi 2.0 govt. will reduce corruption instances. The food security of the beneficiaries would be assured and people would not be deprived of getting ration from any other depots. People who migrates from 1 place to other in search of work would be the prime beneficiaries.

Linking of Aadhar Card with Ration Card is a next step towards digitization. Accordingly, the data of the beneficiaries would now remain available online and can be checked at any PDS / FPS shop. The issues of theft of the subsidized ration at the FPS / PDS shops would also be resolved. A central repository of ration cards would be made to help national level de-duplication.

People would be able to get their quota of food grains from any PDS / FPS shops across the entire nation. Ration cardholders are not going to be tied up to any particular PDS shop and thus would their dependence on shop owners.

Ration Card Digitization is an essential process in which people have to link their Aadhaar card with the ration card. The availability of Point of Sale (PoS) machines would be ensured at all PDS shops for the successful implementation of One Nation One Ration Card Scheme. The central government is working on it and formalities are expected to be completed within 1 year duration. Till date, around 78% of FPS shops have been automated by installing electronic PoS devices.

Integrated Management of PDS (IMPDS) system is already available in some states. These includes the states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Telangana and Tripura. In these states, people can avail ration on subsidy from any district in the state. Department of Food and Public Distribution is a lifeline for beneficiaries as 612 lakh tonnes of food grains is stored in warehouses of CWC, SWC, FCI and private godowns and is distributed to 81 crore people annually.
